Revolution Live, Ft. Lauderdale, FL

For avid fans and newcomers alike, Rusted Root let no one down with their mind-blowing performance on November 28th at Revolution Live. The show was electrified with the energy of bluegrass lovers who sang along to every song that they knew while dancing with every stranger within an arms reach. No one would have guessed, however, that the night would come so alive when they walked past the front doors of the venue as they opened. There were no screaming crowds waiting outside, there was no one begging for a sold-out ticket to get inside, no real commotion to even talk about at all. I arrived and felt slightly dissatisfied that there weren’t more people to appreciate the event about to take place on this evening, but the feelings quickly dissipated once I got inside and realized that this show was going to be the one “they all missed out on”.

Opening for Rusted Root was an Orlando based three-piece band called Clayton Senne. The vibe was immediately set for the evening once they started; their sound a mix of piano and soulful vocals meshed with a slightly pop sounding drum beat. The lyrics were fun, and the bands attitude got everyone in the mood to move. By the time their set was complete, Revolution was packed with all the true Rusted Root fans that I had been expecting to see.

Girls in long skirts, guys with long hair, a few bare feet, and a crowd ready to dance with whomever might be standing next to them, Michael Glabicki took the stage with the rest of the band, and the six of them proceeded to start the show. They gave the crowd everything, from “Send Me On My Way” and “Back To The Earth” to “Drum Trip” and “Ecstasy”. No one’s favorite song was left out of the set list. From ten feet in front of the stage, I spun around to look back on all the faces of those gathered to feel this night, and it was clear that everyone watching truly was feeling something extraordinary. I realized then that it was this that we all came for, not for the screaming crowds outside the doors, not for the argument of who’s a bigger fan because they camped out for tickets, but simply for this… a communion of good souls jamming and dancing to some of the most amazing bluegrass of our generation.
