The Low Down: A Few of Our Favorite Things

Posted 07 January 2010   The Low Down

“We are the music makers and we are the dreamers of dreams”- Willy Wonka in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

As everyone prepares to return to work after nursing their hangovers from New Years Eve, we at Rhythm Scene thought that we’d share some of our favorite music from 2009. At the end of the day, we must not forget that it is being able to share music that brings us all together.

Favorite Albums

An Horse _ Rearrange BedsRearrange Beds by An Horse

Here’s Why: The freshman effort from this Australian two piece is a combination of rocking guitar riffs and melancholy melodies that evokes every single emotion. Kate Cooper and Damon Cox reassure listeners that raw musical talent still exists.

Tracks you have to hear: “Camp Out”, “Company”, and “Little Lungs”

the-sounds-crossing-the-rubiconCrossing The Rubicon by The Sounds

Here’s Why: This (third) release from the five sexy Swedes solidifies them as a musical force to be reckoned with. Even though Crossing The Rubicon is more refined compared to their first two releases, and while it is a cleaner sound, the musicianship and talent that is the very core of the group is still front and center. It’s a fun record that makes you want to get up and dance.

Tracks you have to hear: “4 Songs and a Fight“, “Crossing The Rubicon”, and “Beatbox”

DudemanV.I.P vs. R.I.P by Dudeman

Here’s Why: Even though this is the debut album from the German based duo, the chemistry these dudes share is that of acts that have been together for decades. The rip roaring guitar riffs from Tom Snively III and the ground shaking percussion of Flo Schanze makes the perfect cocktail of old school alternative meets the next generation.

Tracks you have to hear: “Mr. White”, “Girl In a Dream”, and “Leave It”

tegansarasainthoodSainthood by Tegan and Sara

Here’s Why: With six albums under their belt, the twin sisters from Canada show no signs of stopping. Bringing back fan favorite producer Chris Walla, the girls seemed to go back to their roots with this one. The record provides listeners with the best of both worlds: catchy tunes that get stuck in your head for days and the raw, bleeding heart emotion that fans from all over crave.

Tracks you have to hear: “On Directing”, “The Ocean”, and “Alligator”

mute-math-armisticeArmistice by Mutemath

Here’s Why: This quartet from New Orleans is just as energetic on record as they are live. The flawless musical layers create intoxicating melodies that make you crave more. This record never gets old and with each listen a new component is discovered.

Tracks you have to hear: “Backfire”, “Electrify”, and “Burden”
